This serialized, fictional account about Chris and Angie is created to break down and study the terrible event of a wrongful death. Each chapter details some of the real-life situations often encountered by our clients, and we encourage you to follow the entire story to better understand the complexities of this fictional case.
When Chris’ wife is injured at work, he is mortified when she passes away from her injuries. The incident starts him on a journey through the legal ramifications of a wrongful death in the workplace. It is our hope that his story may educate and encourage others who have faced similar situations.
When we begin our story, Angie is the last employee to leave the veterinary office where she works. When her husband Chris calls, she lets him know she’ll soon be on her way home, and he expresses concern over the broken light in the parking lot. Unfortunately, his fears are realized when two thieves use the darkness to break in to steal drugs, injuring Angie in the process.
After not being able to get Angie on the phone again, Chris drives to her place of work. He is horrified to find her unconscious. He calls emergency services, and escorts his wife in the ambulance, hoping that she will be all right.
As Chris waits with his sister, Rosa, for better news about Angie’s condition, he is approached by the detective assigned to the incident at the veterinary clinic. The detective informs him that they have apprehended a suspect found with drugs and that there is security footage. He also explains that while criminal charges will be pressed against the culprits, for the civil charges of providing an unsafe working environment against the property owner, he should consult an attorney.
When Chris is informed that his wife has died, Rosa does her best to comfort him. Although she is used to being the “little” sister, she charges herself with taking care of her brother through his time of grief. She begins the search for an attorney to help them.
As Chris struggles through his bereavement, Rosa starts making to calls to attorneys’ offices to find out who would be most suited to take her brother’s case. Chris is reluctant to discuss the subject, but Rosa reminds him of the medical bills that accumulated during the few days before Angie’s passing.
Rosa accompanies Chris to see an attorney. She assures him that nothing bad could come from a free consultation.
Chris is pleasantly surprised to find an attorney he feels he can trust. The attorney informs him that he should not only be seeking damages for negligence from the property owner’s insurance company, but from the employer as well.
The detective invites Chris to the police station to watch the security footage. The footage is difficult for him to watch as he revisits the moment his wife received the injuries that would lead to her death. Though he finds that her employer installed the cameras to get a better rate on his insurance, Chris does not recognize his wife’s assailants.
While Chris and Rosa are deciding on a movie to watch, he gets a call from the detective. Using information about her stolen ring, it has been recovered at a pawn shop. The man who sold it matched the description of one of the men in the clinic’s security footage, and has been arrested.
After the settlement is reached, Chris grants Angie her dying wish, and adds her ashes to the urn that will transform her into a tree. He hopes to start his live anew as well.
