Proper motorcycle gear can reduce your risk of injury

In a perfect world, riding a motorcycle would be no more dangerous than driving any other type of vehicle. However, inattentive or just plain reckless motorists can put motorcyclists at risk. Fortunately, the use of proper safety gear can help reduce your risk of serious injury should you ever be involved in a motor vehicle crash.

It starts at the top

If you are 21 or older and have the right type of insurance policy, Florida law does not require you to wear a helmet while operating your motorcycle. That said, wearing a helmet could very well mean the difference between life and death. You should bear in mind that helmets can vary wildly in the types of protection they provide. Look for a helmet that has received approval from the Department of Transportation.

If wearing a helmet is simply a non-starter for you, you should at least provide yourself with some form of eye protection. Insects, dirt, debris, and sunlight only have to impede your vision for a split-second for an accident to occur. Secure goggles are best, although sunglasses can work in a pinch.

Leather is more than a fashion choice

Leather isn’t associated with bikers just because it’s part of the culture. It’s a durable material that can help protect you from road rash and other painful injuries. If you don’t care for leather, other synthetic materials can also provide you with a significant degree of protection. You can always change into shorts and a t-shirt when you get to the beach.

These boots are made for more than walking

Flip-flops aren’t going to do much if you have to lay your bike down at a high rate of speed. Sneakers may be slightly better, but shoelaces can become a huge problem if they become entangled in your equipment. A durable pair of boots is the best bet for ensuring you still have your feet following a crash.

Preparation can only go so far

Despite taking all of the safety precautions you can think of, sometimes a crash is simply unavoidable. However, the proper gear can prevent a bad situation from being much worse. If you are hurt in a motorcycle accident, you should speak with a skilled legal professional who can help you determine your options for moving forward.
